New Music Concerts presents Guitar Evolutions
™ The 22 events of the Body Electric/Guitarévolution | festival were created to explore an emergent : expressive synthesis between the imagination and
| power and popular appeal of the electric guitar.
sa New Music Concerts’ contribution to this ambitious
Se festival examines the guitar from both perspectives:
Z we..@ from the intimate combination of acoustic guitar
and string quartet to the dynamic interaction of guitar and live electronics,
as interpreted by a new generation of classically trained composers with an innate understanding of the world’s most popular instrument.
This first concert of our 27th season opens with Omar Daniel’s Quintet for acoustic guitar and strings, ...only the eagle flies the storm, with soloist Rachel Gauk and the Penderecki Quartet. Omar Daniel has received performances of his works throughout North America, Europe and his ancestral Estonia and has composed extensively in solo, chamber and orchestral idioms. New Music Concerts’ June 1997 premiere of his commissioned work, Zwei Lieder nach Rilke, recently garnered him the coveted Jules Léger Prize in chamber music.
French composer Roger Tessier was born in Nantes in 1939 and currently resides in Paris. He is the recipient of awards from SACEM and the Fondation de France. Since 1982 he has been the music director of the Festival of Contemporary Music based in Angers. His 1995 composition for electric guitar and live electronics, Au navire comme un rivage, will be performed by his compatriot Claude Pavy, one of the world's most versatile new music electric guitar soloists.
Tim Brady is one of the leading composers and performers.of Canada's younger generation of musicians. He has been commissioned and performed by ensembles and soloists in Canada, the USA and Europe. Brady is also well known for his work as a solo electric guitarist, combining elements of jazz, rock, electroacoustic and contemporary classical music into his own unique performance style. He is currently the director of Innovations en concert and The Body Electric/Guitarévolution festival.
Brady will perform the world premiere of Fragmenting footprints, Unveiling the dawn for electric guitar and prerecorded tape by Toronto’s Wende Bartley. Ms. Bartley is a composer of electroacoustic music, writing in a variety of media, including concert music, computer music, film and video soundtracks, and music for dance. In her creative work, she explores images important in the collective story of woman, developing new timbral boundaries while giving voice to women's cultural experience.
Mr. Brady will join the Penderecki Quartet to conclude the evening with a rendition of his own composition, Dance me to the end of love, a Quintet inspired by the lyrics of Leonard Cohen.
The Guitar Evolutions concert takes place on Sunday September 28, 1997 at 3:00pm, in the Gallery School of the Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas St. West. New Music Concerts Artistic Director Robert Aitken will host a pre-concert discussion with the composers at 2:15pm.
